A penny for your  thoughts

3/18/2017

Dear Grace Baptist Church Family,

I am not sure of the origin of the phrase but I am sure that you have heard it along the way, “A penny for your thoughts.” I imagine that at the time a penny was worth more than it is today.  But the principle endures—what are you thinking about?

The Scripture reminds us that as we think, so we are (Prov. 23:7). The mind and our thoughts are a major topic in Scripture. Why is this? Because our thinking determines our behavior. So God actually tells us what to think about: Philippians 4:8 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.

We could add many other passages to that including Phil. 2: 5-11 where we learn what the mind of Christ was and what ours is to be. Those are some challenging considerations.

Your thoughts are essential in every aspect of your life. What you think about God, life, circumstances, yourself, others, your worldview, etc. is extremely critical. We are even commanded to bring every thought into captivity of Christ— 2 Corinthians 10:5. We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ.

In a sense your thoughts will make or break you. You can enjoy peace, contentment, forgiveness.  You can have joy and direction in life. You can have spiritual victory. You can be a person of grace and compassion. Those are some of the blessings when we think Biblically. In contrast, if you do not think as God has commanded you will struggle spiritually with bitterness, anger, resentment, discontentment, doubting God, lack of forgiveness among other sinful attitudes.

What you think is important. Don’t let Satan rob you of all that God has supplied. Think God’s thoughts that are based on His Word.

Your thoughts are worth much more than a penny. They are determinative of how you will live your life.

As we have looked at one attribute of God the last two Sundays as part of our worship, may this be your thought for the day, God’s Goodness has been defined as:

“God is the final standard of all good, and all He is and does is worthy of approval.”

I look forward to worshipping the Lord together with you this Sunday. Please be in prayer for me and for our services.
In Christ,
Wynne Kimbrough
