Dear Grace Baptist Church Family,
I once heard it asked, “Has it ever occurred to you that nothing ever occurred to God?” You might need to read that a couple of times.
I have thought about that concept many times. It is another way of expressing some of the attributes of God. It expresses His all knowledge, His eternality, His wisdom, His sovereignty and His eternal plan—to name a few of those attributes. If you think about it, I am sure that you will evaluate that statement in light of other attributes of God.
There is great comfort in considering the foreknowledge of God. Whatever you are going through in life is somehow included in the plan of God. That does not mean that God is the author of evil. Satan is and men do many evil things. This is incomprehensible to us because we are finite. However, what it simply means is that while we might not understand the ways of God we can fully trust the character of God. In this case, God knows.
Romans 11:33 - "Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!"
Do you trust God? One of the excellent and classic books regarding this topic is “Trusting God” by Jerry Bridges. I personally think it is one of the finest books on the topic that you will find. I need to refer to it regularly in my own life. Among the many things that Bridges points out is found in a 3-point premise that is in the first chapter of the book. They are identified as:
• God is completely sovereign.
• God is infinite in wisdom.
• God is perfect in love.
Then he writes, “Someone has expressed these three truths as they relate to us in this way: “God in His love always wills what is best for us. In His wisdom, He always knows what is best, and in His sovereignty He has the power to bring it about.”
Note also Proverbs 27:1, "Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring" and Lamentations 3:37-38, "Who has spoken and it came to pass, unless the Lord has commanded it? Is it not from the mouth of the Most High that good and bad come?"
There is much for us to think about and meditate on regarding the implications of this topic. I encourage you to do that in the days ahead. Let all of life run through the grid of Scripture. Look at life in light of God’s attributes. He is not distant!!
I look forward to worshipping our great God together with you this Sunday. Please be in prayer for me and for our services.
