As part of our worship each Sunday, this month we are focusing on the attribute of God’s beauty. We are using this definition: “God is the possessor and the sum of all desirable qualities.”
There are a lot of implications to this concept. If there is anything good or desirable or truly beautiful as defined by Scripture, then it is a part of the being of God. I think of Phil. 4:8 when I reflect on this attribute: Philippians 4:8 "Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things."
I also think of some other aspects of beauty that God allows us to catch a glimpse of like a sunrise or sunset, mountains and even the amazing things of nature such as flowers or a snowflake. These things are His creation. They are all created for His glory. And they reveal something of His nature.
We had some idea of this attribute of God this week as the Total Solar Eclipse happened. We got to see it through those special glasses. Some people saw the full effect of it in those particular places that went dark in the middle of the day for over 2 minutes. It was truly fascinating. You could pause to think of God’s creation and order. You could think of the power of the Sun. You can consider the Earth and moon and stars and the planets. The temperature went down about 8 degrees as we watched the eclipse. It was amazing!
When you realize the might and power of God…when you see the beauty of His creation…when you pause to reflect on His beauty—- it will affect you. It will settle you in your soul because you will more fully realize that this God of beauty and creation is YOUR Heavenly Father…and He cares for you.
Psalm 8:1–4, "O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens. Out of the mouth of babies and infants, you have established strength because of your foes, to still the enemy and the avenger. When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him?
Take a few minutes to consider God’s attribute of beauty.
